Alice’s bicycle is custom-built from a set of components acquired over a period of more than twenty years. Her Holdsworth Mistral frame was assembled in Great Britain in 1982—a touring model with geometry consisting of gentle angles for comfortable long-distance riding. The tubing is Reynolds 531, a steel alloy. Wheels are thirty-six-spoke Mavic Sun rims on Campagnolo hubs, outfitted with Specialized Armadillo tires (700x25c). Front and rear brakes are Shimano S-105; Campagnolo shifters are mounted on the down tube. Front derailleur is Shimano S-105, rear derailleur is Shimano Deore XTR, a long-cage shifter that can accommodate a wide range of gears on a long chainstay. Three front chainrings have thirty, forty-two, and fifty-two teeth; rear freewheel has six rings ranging evenly from fourteen to thirty-four teeth. Crank arms are Shimano S-105, and pedals are Shimano SPD M535. Blackburn Lowrider racks are mounted on the front fork to hold front panniers; the rear rack is Blackburn. She indicates brand names below for products she was especially pleased with.

Bobbi’s bike is a medium-sized Softride Solo, sometimes called a beam bike because the rider sits on a carbon-fiber beam suspended from the front of the bicycle. No down tube connects the seat to the bicycle, resulting in less road shock to the rider. The bicycle is equipped with a Softride shock-absorbing stem to alleviate carpal tunnel syndrome. The wheels are thirty-six-spoke Mavic Sun Open Pro. Front and rear brakes are Shimano Ultegra; the shifters are Shimano Ultegra STI with a triple crank in front and a Shimano Deore XTR rear derailleur, a long cage shifter. The three front chainrings have thirty, forty-two, and fifty-two teeth; the rear cassette has nine rings ranging from twelve to thirty-two teeth each. The
crank arms are Shimano and the pedals are Look. The front is equipped with Blackburn Lowrider racks; the back has a Blackburn Expedition rack modified to fit the unique frame.

Can’t wait to read your book!

What was the total weight of your gear?
Thanks, ladies, for recording your experiences and your trip information in your book. I enjoyed reading it as prep for my own trip….and…this became so beneficial…as the MRS fretted over my going off on such a solo adventure, I thought one day, perhaps if she would read your book she would gain a new appreciation for the adventure. I suggested she read it…she did…and, as a result, became perhaps the bigget fan of me doing the trip…and has become part of it in the sense of now “mothering” me, in a good sense, to be sure I prepare properly and have what I need. Thanks, ladies. You have made my day, so to speak. ….Barry
